An Evening of John Cage, "I have nothing to say, I am saying it, and that is poetry"
John Milbauer celebrates the centennial of the birth of American maverick, John Cage (1912-1992). Steinway artist Milbauer will perform Cage's groundbreaking Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano. The work is a compendium of Cage's writing for prepared piano evolving from his fascination with the eight permanent emotions of Hindu philosophy--the Heroic, the Erotic, the Wonderous, the Comic, the Sorrowful, the Frightening, the Angry, and the Odious--and their common journey toward tranquility.
Sonatas and Interludes is rarely heard in its 60 minute entirety due to the difficulties of preparation and the challenge of finding a suitable instrument. Preparation of the piano includes placing screws, nuts, bolts, rubber, erasers, and weather stipping inside the piano to modify the sounds. For this concert, a nine-foot Steinway in need of renovation will be used. Prepartions can take 10 or more hours. The audience will be invited onstage to view this piano after the concert.
