Widely acclaimed by critics, Beethoven's Mass in C, Op. 86 is referred to by classical music enthusiasts as a long-underrated masterpiece and is among the least-performed of his larger works. Commissioned by Haydn's former employer, Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy II, the mass contrasts Beethoven's typical vigorous, dynamic language with surprising moments of pathos and tenderness characteristic of the personal works he wrote in honor and memory of friends.
